Sustainability Regulation, Competitiveness and Global Standard-Setting
In the wake of the Omnibus discussions, sustainability regulation is entering a new phase. While the EU has taken a leading role with frameworks such as CSRD and CSDDD, we are now seeing a rapid acceleration of sustainability standards globally. Major jurisdictions are releasing their own requirements, and the ISSB standards are gaining traction across markets, most recently illustrated by new developments in China.
In a global regulatory environment, timing matters. First movers do not just comply earlier; they help shape standards, influence market practice, and create reference points that others build upon. If the EU slows down or fragments its approach, there is a real risk that the sustainability rules for European companies will increasingly be written elsewhere.
